Obituary for
Mary C. Heneghan
Long-time Mount Vernon resident Mary Coughlan Heneghan died at Sutton Park nursing home on October 2. She was 89. Born in 1927 in midtown Manhattan, Mary soon moved to Mount Vernon with her father Timothy Coughlan, an apartment superintendent, and mother Teresa Horan. The family also spent some time in Banagher, Ireland, the birthplace of her father, but when her father died there in 1949, she and her mother returned to Mount Vernon. Mary had a career as a sharp and efficient bookkeeper for several local businesses, including a local branch of ExxonMobil Corporation. In 1954, she married Thomas P. Heneghan, and was married to him for almost 10 years before he died in 1963 from kidney failure. Mary nursed him when he fell ill, and later took care of her mother, who died in 1985. She later welcomed into her home her cousin Michael Coughlin, and cared for him before he predeceased her in 2007. Mary was ever a caring, generous, loving and loyal relative and friend, and will be greatly missed by her friends and neighbors. She is survived by a niece, Shirley Coughlin, of Manchester, England, and a nephew, John Coughlin, also of Manchester.
Visiting hours to celebrate Mary’s life are on Thursday October 6 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at Yannantuono Burr Davis Sharpe Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m., at Sts. Peter & Paul and St. Ursula Church on Birch Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of Mount Vernon Shelter Animals, Inc. 501(c)(3), PO Box 244, New Rochelle NY 10804.
