Obituary for
Jack Gherardi
Jack Paul Gherardi died on May 17, 2017. Born at 2 Linden Avenue in Mt.Vernon on October 1923, he spent his whole life in Mt. Vernon. He often remarked that his childhood, spent on Linden Ave., William St., High St., and Terrace Ave. could not have been better. Great times, great people. Jack graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in June, 1941. He then began working in the office at Singer Sewing Machine in Manhattan. In June, 1943 Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army, then stationed at Camp Barkeley in Abilene, Texas. In February, 1945, he was sent to the Pacific with the U.S. 10th Army Medical Corps. He was stationed in Hawaii, Saipan, and Okinawa during that battle. He was then part of the Army of Occupation after the surrender. Jack was discharged in March, 1946 having attained the rank of Technical Sargeant. Jack married his dear wife Marie Petrillo in June, 1949. He then began his career at Gramatan Hardware Corp. in Mt. Vernon, a firm founded by his father-in-law, Albert Petrillo in 1925. Jack remained at Gramatan Hardware until its closing in 2006. Jack was pre-deceased by his loving wife Marie in 2010; his parents Frank (Francesco) and Mabel (Amabile), natives of Somendenna, Italy. Also pre-deceased b his brothers Joe, John, Pete, Trent, and Frank and his sisters Tina and Irene. He leaves behind his children Albert (Rosemarie), Maryellen (Jack Zill), and Jack Jr. (Susan). Also, his grandchildren Dana, Adam, Alex (Kim), Jessica, Madeline, Ben, and Alison. Jack will be remembered for his intelligence, work ethic, quick wit, bawdy sense of humor, and his love of music. Holidays will not be the same without him joining his family with after dinner sing-a-longs. And, a note of great gratitude and thanks must be given to Jack’s longtime aide, Ms. Maureen Thomas. What the family would have done without the help and sacrifice of this wonderful woman is unimaginable. Family will honor Jack’s life on Friday (today) May 19, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment only on Saturday morning at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Jansen Hospice, jansenhospice.org, a fine organization that offered much support and comfort.
